How to amend your SMTP Port in Mozilla Thunderbird 17 or higher

Note. Thunderbird is a free application. For anyone using an older version than 17, it is suggested you upgrade direct from Mozilla – https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/

Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will block sending mail on the default port 25. To remedy this, simply follow the steps detailed below. These will take you through the steps on how to change your port to 587, which in turn will allow mail to be sent.

Step 1. Start Mozilla Thunderbird. Now select Applications Menu » Options » Account Settings.

Step 2. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP), then highlight the specific account you want to change the outgoing server for. Now click edit.

Step 3. Change the port to 587 as shown below and click OK to save the change

Step 4. Click OK at the foot of the task pane.

Once completed, you should be able to send mail via the outgoing mail server without being blocked by your Internet Service Provider.
